My name's Ian. I work in one of Comet’s After Sales Service Teams, so I’m always out on the road.
What's a typical day? Well, first thing in the morning I'll receive a delivery of spare parts, and I’ll check these against my daily jobs list. I then plan my route and call customers with expected arrival times – all of this before I’ve even left home!
Generally, the customers treat you fairly well when you knock on the door. You're there to fix something and that's what they want, and you usually get it done the first time.
Every job is different and that's the way I like it really. Once I was asked just to put a door handle through a customer's letterbox because they were going to be at work. Later, I found out the dog was in there, and as I put it through the letterbox the dog bit it in half. I wasn't really sure what to do about that!
To do your job properly at Comet, you need to be flexible. You also need to be able to pick things up fairly quickly and learn new things practically every day. When you're doing the sort of job I do, there's always something new coming up, so you're constantly learning. You've got to keep on top of it, but there's a lot of training and that keeps you going. I've learnt an awful lot since I've been at here.
I take a lot of pride in my work. I think you have to, because you're in a customer's house, and you're dealing with water and electric. So you've got to know what you're doing. If you don't do your job properly, then anything could happen.
