Gary

My name's Gary. I'm a warehouse manager at Comet and I've been here for eight years. It's my first and only job.

When I first started, I was quite young and shy, but then after a while – I'd say about a year – the job made me much more confident. It's quite a friendly place and a friendly atmosphere as well.

My store manager has been a massive help. He's put me through our Next Generation course, and gave me the job of warehouse manager and merchandising manager. He had a lot of faith in me. He thought I could do it, and it turns out I can. He's put me up for a lot for things and he's always promoting me.

The Next Generation course is a one-year course. You have to do a presentation when you apply for it. Then it involves going on workshop meetings and doing some work at home. It's a lot of hard work, but basically what it does is it puts you on a pedestal. It says: "Look, I've done the work, I know what I'm talking about, and I think I can do the job of a sales manager."

No matter what department you're in, there are always opportunities for you to grow and move on to different departments. It's unlimited really. You can do whatever you like.

There is a lot of hard work involved as well, and there can be a bit of pressure. But overall, the thing that makes it here is the people. Quite often the whole store will go out, just basically to bond, and it's a great laugh.

If you're a positive person, it's a positive place.
